Side effects of biscuits

Starting the day with tea/coffee and biscuits in India is a daily ritual that almost every house follows. The humble drink along with cookie and biscuits comes handy as a no-fuss breakfast and also as a convenient evening supper. While keeping a check on the number of cups of tea/coffee you consume daily, have you ever wondered how many biscuits you eat in a day? Read this piece of information that talks about the dark side of biscuits and how they affect the digestive and immune system.

2/7

Contains palm oil

Palm oil is 100 percent fat that when consumed on a regular basis may increase certain heart disease risk factors. Also, reusing the palm oil decreases its antioxidant capacity and further exposes you to various heart diseases. It is the cheapest and one of the most unhealthy oils to consume and most biscuits are made using it.
3/7

Uses all purpose flour

We all know that biscuits and cookies use all purpose flour, which is bad for our gut. The white flour is devoid of micro and macronutrients that lead to weight gain, a spike in blood sugar, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases and indigestion
4/7

Unconscious eating

According to a study published in 2013 at Connecticut College, eating biscuits activates similar pleasure in the brain as cocaine and morphine and that's the reason humans never settle for one and develop the habit of unconscious or overeating.
5/7

High in sodium content

According to Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH), average sweet biscuits contain 0.4g of salt per 25g bag, which when consumed in excess quantity can increase the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure. Excess sodium intake also leads to water retention resulting in bloating, puffiness and weight gain.
6/7

High preservatives

Store bought biscuits and cookies contain Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Research says that they both are bad for human blood. Apart from this, biscuits also contain Sodium Benzoate, which is linked with certain types of DNA damage.
7/7

Verdict

While all these points talk about the dark side of biscuits, another fact is that eating anything in moderation is good. The same rule applies in the case of biscuits. Also, it is suggested to consume homemade biscuits, as you can keep a check on the quality and quantity of the ingredients.
