How to ensure food safety?

Recently, World Food Safety Day was observed globally on 7th June, and on this occasion, the World Health Organization (WHO) shared five key practices that are important to maintain the safety of food while keeping the nutrients intact. This day is celebrated every year to meet the need for nutritious, safe and sufficient food for people around the world. Here are the five key pointers shared by WHO that we should all take care of while cooking food. (Images courtesy: iStock)

2/6

Take care of cleanliness

WHO has shared that people should maintain cleanliness in the kitchen. The organization has put focus on the part that people should wash hands before eating or touching any food. Apart from this, wash hands with soap after touching the garbage or cleaning.

3/6

Separate raw and cooked food

In the second point, it has ben advised to keep raw foods like sea food, raw meat, poultry and their raw juices separate from cooked food. Raw foods contain harmful bacteria that can mix with cooked food and contaminate them as well. People should use separate containers, chopping boards, and utensils to hold and cut raw and cooked foods.

4/6

Cook well

Cook the food thoroughly to destroy the bacteria present in the food. If the food is cooked properly then the bacteria present in it will be destroyed and will not be harmful to our health. You can use a food thermometer to check this, it will inform you whether your food is cooked properly or not.

5/6

Keep food at the proper temperature

By keeping food in a safe temperature and environment, it prevents the growth of harmful insects. Perishable food should be kept in the refrigerator at a temperature below 5 degrees C i.e. 41 degrees F. By doing this, bacteria do not grow in the food and the food does not spoil quickly.

6/6

Use pure and clean water

Use pure and clean water from cooking to drinking. The use of clean water does not spread dirt, as well as it has been advised to use fresh and raw fruits and vegetables.
