What are sweets and desserts?

When we talk about sweets and desserts, all we can see is a variety of our favourite sweet dishes and desserts. When you crave something sweet, anything works ranging from candies to ice-creams and delicious delicacies. However, did you know that sweets and desserts are not the same thing? It's surprising, right? Not many people are aware of the fact that sweets and desserts are different. Let’s find out more about the differences.

Sweets

Candies are also called sweets in British English. It is a confection that contains sugar as the main ingredient. You must have heard the term ‘Sugar Confectionary’! Chocolate, chewing gum and sugar candy, these are called sweets.

3/6

Desserts

Desserts on the other hand, is a course that concludes a meal. It contains foods such as confection dishes or fruits, and a beverage like wine or liqueur. It may include coffee, cheese, nuts and other savoury delicacies that are prepared with utmost perfection.

4/6

Are sweets and desserts healthy?

Honestly, it depends on the type of ingredients that are used while preparing the desserts i.e., a mango sorbet is definitely healthy. However, we can’t say the same about sweets, candies are just sugar and more than the moderate consumption can be harmful in the long run.

5/6

Why sweets and desserts are different

The most basic difference between sweets and desserts is in the way they are served or eaten. Candies can be eaten anywhere, desserts on the other hand, need to be savoured and are generally consumed after a meal such as cakes, pastries and ice-creams.

6/6

Do you have a sweet tooth?

Sweets and desserts are both delicious in their own right but one should be aware of how much they are consuming these confectioneries. Candies due to their sugar content, are one of the root causes of tooth decay and diabetic people often have restrictions for consuming dessert items as they increase sugar content in your blood. Therefore, one should be aware of the amount they are consuming everyday as it can be the cause of various illnesses.
