But you would be amazed to know that it is the magic of the spice mix that makes every dish so unusual yet delightful. Here’s one such classic spice mix known as the Murungain Podi which is the lesser known secret ingredient in many South Indian delicacies.

Podi masala is an amalgamation of dal, garlic and several dry spices. Added to curries, stews, sabzis or served with Idli or vadas, the Podi masala is not just a taste enhancer, but at the same time it is rich in health enriching properties. But what makes Podi masala so healthy?

Health benefits of Podi masala


Mururngai Keerai Podi is made with Moringa (Drumstick), which makes this spice a potent mix. Made with the goodness of Drumstick leaves, this spice is an amalgamation of oil and roast chana dal, garlic, red chilies, black pepper and dried moringa powder.

Adding antioxidant rich Moringa to your diet can simply improve your digestion, increase the metabolic rate and accelerate the process of weight loss. A daily intake of Moringa can help in blood purification, improve skin texture, boost immunity and give your body a rich boost of mineral and antioxidants. It also helps in reducing the damage caused due to the presence of free radicals. Thus, adding this spice to your dal, soups, stews or idlis is a great idea.

How to make Murungain Podi recipe at home

Take a pan, add in 3 cups of Moringa leaves dried. Transfer to a plate and keep it aside.

Next, to the same pan, add in 1 cup urad dal, dry roast till it turns golden and transfer to a plate. Repeat the process with ¼ cup chana dal, 2 tablespoon sesame seeds.

To the same pan, add in some oil, add 6 red whole chilies, 6chilies, 1 tablespoon peppercorns, salt and asafoetida. Grind the lentils, dried moringa leaves, spices together after cooling and store in an airtight container.
