Why is bat spit coffee getting popular?

Are you a coffee lover, who has tried butter coffee, mushroom coffee and broccoli coffee too? If yes, we have got a new variation that is animal-enhanced has got a smooth flavour. Grown in the rich volcanic soils of central Madagascar’s Itasy province, this coffee is nibbled by bats and interestingly, it is coveted by humans even more. (Image: Reuters)

What is ‘Bat Spit Coffee’?

It’s a coffee variation called Bourbon pointu, which has bat spit in it and gives the beans a uniquely smooth flavour. It’s a recent trend in Madagasca, where people earlier had no interest in growing coffee.

3/6

How it works?

Technically, when wild bats chew the ripe coffee berries, it results in a chemical reaction between their digestive fluids and outside air which further leaves behind a uniquely smooth flavour on the beans. According to media report, this coffee stays for a longer time in your mouth and it is not at all acidic.
4/6

Is it expensive?

According to coffee experts, Bourbon pointu sells domestically at $101 per pound (200 euros/kg), which is 50 times more than the price of commodity-grade coffee. It’s the bat spit that makes it an expensive affair.
5/6

Who introduced this coffee variation?

It’s the brainchild of farmer and agricultural entrepreneur Jacques Ramarlah, who two years ago reintroduced bourbon pointu beans after observing them nibbling the best beans. At present, Ramarlah works with around 90 farmers for production and marketing of the coffee beans. This year they produced two tonnes of coffee and have the target to produce 20 tonnes by 2021.

Other unique coffee variations

This is not the only animal-enhanced coffee available in the market. According to a study, Southeast Asia’s Kopi Luwak coffee is made from beans salvaged from civet cat poop and in Thailand elephant dung coffee is very famous as well.
