The monsoon season is in its full swing, and it calls for extra care of the body and gives us the reason to enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables. One such food item that celebrity nutritionist and author Rujuta Diwekar recommends consuming right now is Desi Dates, or Khajoor. Sharing the plate full of dates, bananas, and mogra on Instagram, she wrote, "Desi dates, or fresh khajoor, and why it’s the best thing that you can chew on this monsoon." Benefits of eating fresh dates

In her post, Rujuta mentioned the benefits of eating fresh dates, which states that they are helpful in improving hemoglobin (Hb) and energy levels. They are also useful in treating sleep disorders, fight most infections and allergies, and also boost exercise performance. They are also helpful in relieving constipation and acidity. Also, in 2018, Rujuta had shared a post, where she mentioned that those who are on weight loss regime, should eat dates, as they facilitate reducing flabs. She also mentioned that dates are helpful for women during periods, as they prevent midnight cramps. But, according to her latest post, the main reason why you should eat dates is, because they are good looking, taste good and are in season right now.

What does study say?

According to a study by the National Library of Medicine, dates have a low to moderate glycemic index, which lowers blood glucose, improves insulin sensitivity, and reduces the risk of diabetes. They are also rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids, which help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, and protect against chronic diseases.

Right way to eat dates

Rujuta recommends eating it raw as the first thing in the morning. And she also suggests eating a few dates post lunch, only if your hemoglobin (Hb) levels are low. And if you have kids at home who are around the age of puberty, make sure to add a few to their daily diet, as mid meal, suggests Rujuta.

Where can you buy Desi Khajoor?

According to Rujuta, it is best to shop them from local bazaars, as they are free of preservatives and chemicals. In her post, she has also mentioned that once you find fresh dates, save the seeds and plant in your compound.
