Black seeds, or kalonji, are commonly used in parathas and pooris. Have you ever wondered why? They are also used in pickles, breads, and spice blends and offer a nutty, slightly bitter flavor while enhancing overall wellness. It is said that regular intake of kalonji helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and regulate blood pressure, promoting overall cardiovascular wellness. According to the National Library of Medicine, these seeds have promising heart-protective effects and have a compound called thymoquinone (TQ) that protects against myocardial injury by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

It is also said that kalonji seeds ease bloating, indigestion, and stomach cramps. It stimulates digestive enzymes and supports gut health. It is proven that kalonji seeds act as a digestive aid, help manage indigestion, flatulence, and abdominal pain caused by gas by stimulating digestive juices and improving liver function.

It is also said that kalonji may improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels, especially for people with type 2 diabetes. A 2010 study states that kalonji seeds help decrease insulin resistance, and improve beta-cell function, without affecting body weight or liver/kidney safety markers.

How to consume kalonji

Raw: It is suggested to take 1/2 tsp of kalonji seeds with warm water in the morning on an empty stomach.
With honey: One can also mix the powder of seeds with a teaspoon of honey for easier intake.
Infused oil: One can also use black seed oil in salads to enhance the nutrition.
In daily foods: Another way is to sprinkle roasted kalonji over curries, pickles, bread, or parathas.
As tea: Simply boil kalonji seeds in water for 5–10 minutes, strain, and sip like herbal tea after meals.
