'Poutine' lands in controversy with diner threatening to change its name

The current tension between Ukraine and Russia has seen the world stand up for the former with people showing their support in every way possible. If we go by recent reports, a restaurant in Quebec, Canada has shown its support to Ukraine in a unique way by changing the name of a popular Canadian dish Poutine as it sounds very similar to Russian President Vladimir ‘Putin’. Apparently, the restaurant named Le Roy Jucep claims to have invented the dish and by doing so, they are showing their solidarity with Ukraine. (Images courtesy: iStock)

The social media post

This action was taken by the popular Canadian restaurant over a Facebook post, which has now been deleted as the diner received several threats after the announcement. The deleted post read, “Temporarily retire the word p***** from its trademark in order to express, in its own way, its profound dismay over the situation in Ukraine.” However, after receiving threats and people’s support, the diner posted “Very touching to learn that our tiny message of support has been sent from Drummondville all the way to Ukraine! What is ‘Poutine’?

Often served as a side dish, poutine has been there since 1950s and is made of French Fries, cheese curds and a brown gravy made of beef and chicken stock. It’s probably called so as the other dishes made of potatoes are also called poutiness. This dish is so much popular that Canada calls it their ‘national dish’.
