​Tripura launches Bamboo rice

As the nation goes vocal for local, Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb took a step ahead to launch and promote the local produce- Bamboo Flower rice as an ‘economically profitable’ product.

​What is bamboo rice?


Bamboo Rice also known as Mulayari is actually the seed of a dying bamboo shoot, which is produced at the end of its life span. The extraction of this rice takes years to cultivate as bamboo flowers in the form of a short grain rice.

​What makes Bamboo rice so unique?

Right after launching the Bamboo cookies and Bamboo bottles, CM Biplab Kumar Deb, recently launched Bamboo rice at the state Secretariat. While expressing his views and hopes around the produce of Bamboo based products fueling the growth of Tripura’s economic landscape, he said “Bamboo flower-rice will be an economically profitable product and people can become self-reliant with it". He further encouraged entrepreneurs to take initiatives in marketing this exotic variety.


While launching the Bamboo Rice flower, he spoke about the umpteen benefits of Bamboo rice and how bamboo based products can boost immunity. Moreover, he further emphasizes on the extraction of this rice from flower blossoms of bamboo and how this can turn out to be a lucrative revenue generating opportunity for the state.


He further spoke about how this exotic rice variant can be a great source of nutrition for people suffering from diabetes and joint pain. Apart from that, this rice varint is a good source of protein and can boost immunity naturally.

“We have made bamboo biscuits, bamboo bottles in the past. This rice is made by milling bamboo flowers. It is very helpful against diabetes cholesterol and fat”, Deb added.

​Bamboo cultivation


At present, Tripura cultivates 21 species of bamboo across an area of 3,246 sq. Km. Last year, the state government rolled out a plan to include an area of 15,000 hectare under the bamboo cultivation, which included forest, rural development departments and local communities as a step towards revenue generation. State government of Tripura is leaving no stone unturned to cultivate, grow and promote bamboo based products.
