Shakes and smoothies are easy ways of adding many nutrients to a daily diet. They are easy to make, less time-consuming, and pack all necessary nutrients, which help boost gut health and immunity. One such smoothie that even doctors recommend is the papaya smoothie. Addressing the importance of papaya smoothie, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, recently shared a reel on Instagram, where he briefed the benefits of papaya for gut health and also shared the simplest papaya smoothie recipe that one can try at home. Scroll to read the details.

What does the doctor say

According to Dr Saurabh, it is one of the best fruits for gut health. It is soothing for heartburn, helps with bloating and keeps constipation in check. His post reads that papaya is rich in enzymes, fiber, and antioxidants—making it one of the best fruits for digestion and gut health.

What does study say

According to a PMC study, papaya supports gut health through its dietary fibers, enzymes, and anti-inflammatory properties. Dietary fibers from ripe papaya promote beneficial gut microbiota fermentation, producing short-chain fatty acids that improve gut health. Papaya also contains papain enzyme which aids protein digestion, alleviating indigestion and bloating. Papaya is also said to have antioxidants that help reduce gut inflammation and improve overall digestive function.

Prevents cancer

As per the National Library of Medicine's study titled Anticancer potential of Carica papaya Linn black seed extract against human colon cancer cell line: in vitro study, papaya (Carica papaya Linn) seeds offer anti-cancer properties that can cure various types of cancer, such as liver and prostate cancer. It is also said that the antioxidants in papaya, such as lycopene, inhibit cancer cell growth and reduce oxidative stress, lowering the risk of cancer. It is also found that papaya's carotene can stimulate the uterus and help regulate period cramps.

Other benefits of papaya

It is said that if you are looking for a remedy to melt that belly fat, then start having a bowl of papaya every morning. Papaya, when consumed first thing in the morning, can help you avoid hunger pangs throughout the day. Naturally hydrating and easy to digest, it works beautifully as a breakfast starter, especially in warm climates where heavy meals feel uncomfortable. Papaya is low in calories and high in fibre, which can help control hunger and keep you full for a longer duration, aiding in weight management. Eating papaya on an empty stomach can also ease bowel movements due to its high fibre content that helps provide relief from constipation and improve digestive health. Along with this, its digestive enzymes work gently to break down proteins, detox the stomach, and improve nutrient absorption, making mornings feel lighter and fresher. Regular intake is also believed to support metabolism and reduce bloating, giving the digestive system a smoother rhythm. It is also said that one medium papaya provides over 200% of your daily vitamin C requirement, which is crucial for stimulating white blood cell production, enhancing immune response, and shortening the duration of colds and infections. Beyond this, papaya also brings antioxidants like beta-carotene and flavonoids, compounds that guard cells against damage, reduce inflammation, and support skin health, leaving you with not just better digestion but a natural glow that reflects inner wellness.
