Foods that bring good luck in Makar Sankranti

Makarsankranti marks the beginning of the festive season and it is celebrated all around the country as one of the most prominent harvest festivals. This year Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on the 15th January.

On this day Sun is worshipped and it ie believed that worshipping him brings good luck and prosperity. As per the Hindu calendar, Makar Sankranti marks one of the most influential transits and it impacts our lives. According to Hindu mythology, one of the major reasons why sun is worshipped on this day is the transit of sun into the Makar rashi (capricorn) which also gives this festival its name - Makar Sankranti. This day marks the end of short, cold winter days and opens the gate for the bountiful spring.

Since ages, Makar Sankranti has been one of the most important festivals as it marks the beginning of a new transit as well as the festive season. In fact, this festival is celebrated all around the country and every region has a unique way of celebrating it.

Interestingly, food happens to be the soul of this festival. It is that time of the year, when various delights are prepared to offer as a prasad. There are a few foods, which are believed to bring a lot of good luck as it is believed that on Sankranti you can seek the blessings of the Sun God by offering and eating seasonal foods.

According to renowned Astrologer, Manav Jaitly, “Foods play a pivotal role in Makar Sankranti and it is believed that eating or donating gur, til or urad dal, brings about a lot of happiness and prosperity. In fact,it believed that preparing gur based delicacies and khichdi as bhog and later distributing it also brings a lot of good fortune. Apart from that, eating or donating these few foods is beneficial for everyone. However, every sun sign can benefit more by adding some rashi specific foods."

Adding Gur (jaggery) to your meal on Makar Sankarnti is good. It is believed to bring a lot of good luck.

Eating as well as donating til (sesame) on Makar Sankrati will be a good thing for Taurians.

Eating moong dal khichdi and Sarso ka Saag on Makar Sankranti brings a lot of good fortune. In fact, preparing khichdi at home as a bhog and distributing it is also a good thing to go for on Sankranti.
