The Marwari wedding tradition that made stars serve food to guest

Wonder why the A listers of Bollywood were trolled for serving food at Isha Ambani's wedding? Well, the clips of Aishwarya Rai Bachan, Abhishek Bachan, Amitabh Bachan and SRK serving food to the wedding guests made headlines, but the reality was far different from what the pictures portrayed. Interestingly, the lavish dinner was an age-old tradition of Marwari weddings known as Sajjan Goth. Here’s all you need to know about this unique custom.

2/5

What is Sajjan Goth?

Sajjan Goth is a quintessential part of Marwari wedding culture, wherein right after the JaiMala (exchanging of garlands) the groom's family is invited for an exquisite royal feast, which is served in silverware as a part of the custom. As per the culture, the bride's family serves food to the groom's family and this hospitality marks the union of two families.

Change in tradition

Traditionally, only the male members of the groom's family came for the ceremony of Sajjan Goth, but over the years there has been an inclusion of women in a similar ceremony known as Sajjni goth.

What is Sajjni Goth?

As per the Marwari culture, ladies of the groom's family are invited for a hearty feast, which is a similar sit-down dinner served in beautiful silverware, which very much explains why the close Bollywood families were seen serving food to Anand Piramal's family at the Ambani wedding.

5/5

Why was silverware used?

Silver symbolizes class and it is believed to bring good luck, this is one of the reasons why at Marwari weddings food is served in silverware, which is later given to the groom's guests as a token of love.
