Does ice cream really cools your body?

As summer's scorching heat bears down upon us, few things seem as delightful as indulging in a scoop of ice cream. From the creamy texture to the variety of flavours, ice cream has been an all-time favorite treat for people of all ages. There has been a popular belief that consuming ice cream can help cool down our bodies in hot weather. However, let's delve into the real truth behind this notion and explore the actual properties of ice cream in relation to body temperature regulation. (Images courtesy: iStock)

2/5

The cooling sensation

When we take a spoonful of ice cream, we do experience an initial cooling sensation. This occurs due to the extreme cold temperature of the ice cream itself. As it comes into contact with the warm surfaces of our mouth and throat, the heat from our body is transferred to the colder ice cream, providing a temporary cooling effect. However, this initial sensation is localized and does not significantly influence the overall body temperature.

3/5

The body's regulatory mechanism

The human body possesses a remarkable ability to regulate its core temperature within a narrow range, which is typically around 36.5 to 37.5 degrees C (97.7 to 99.5 degrees F). The primary organ responsible for this regulation is the hypothalamus, which is located in the brain. When the external temperature rises, the body employs various mechanisms to cool down, such as sweating.

The REAL truth about cooling properties of Ice creams

While ice cream might provide a momentary relief by reducing the temperature in our mouth, it does not directly cool down our core body temperature. In fact, consuming ice cream triggers a more complex response from our body's thermoregulatory system. In fact, when we consume ice cream or any cold food, our body tries to counteract the sudden drop in temperature. The hypothalamus senses the coldness in the mouth and initiates a response to maintain the core temperature. To achieve this, the body might reduce blood flow to the extremities and redirect it to vital organs to prevent excessive heat loss. This process ensures that the core temperature remains stable, and the cooling effect of ice cream is localized.

5/5

The bottom line

While ice cream may offer a momentary respite from the heat, it does not cool down the body in the truest sense. As the mercury rises, opt for a balanced approach to beat the heat – enjoy a scoop of ice cream as a refreshing treat, but remember that staying hydrated and seeking shade in hot weather are essential for maintaining your overall well-being.
