The religious reasons

As per Hinduism, every day of this month is devoted to a certain God and holds significance among the devotees and thus, the whole month is considered auspicious. For example, Monday is for Shiva Puja, Tuesday is for Mangala Gauri Puja, while on Wednesday, people do Budh Puja. On Thursday, it’s the Brihaspati Puja, Friday is for Jara Jivantika Puja and Saturday is kept for Asvatta Maruti Puja. Also, several major Hindu festivals fall in Sawan such as Teej, Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan and Naag Panchami. Thus, it is said that one should avoid having non-vegetarian food during the holy month of Sawan.

What does the Ayurveda say?

As per Ayurveda, Sawan or Shravan is the month when our immunity falls at the lowest levels. Eating non-vegetarian, spicy or oily foods during this month can impact the immunity as well as the digestive system as they are heavy to digest. It is for this reason, that Ayurveda says one should indulge in light foods that can be easily digested while indulging in soups.

4/5

The scientific reason

During the month of Sawan, our body becomes very weak. From slower metabolism to a weaker digestive system, increased risk of infections and lethargy, this month is associated with all these health issues. If a person consumes non-vegetarian foods, it leads to all these things, which can hamper your whole body cycle and further cause imbalance in your body that can lead to several health problems. Thus, one should avoid consuming non-vegetarian foods in Sawan.

The breeding reason

The month of Sawan is considered the breeding season for all the animals, be it the aquatic creatures or the terrestrial ones. This month also signifies love and it is considered a sin in Hinduism to kill any living thing.
