Sawan: Healthy fasting

Sawan is considered one of the holiest months of the Hindu calendar. The whole pious month is dedicated to Shiv ji. Most of us try keeping a fast throughout the auspicious month and if not the whole month, then on Mondays for sure. Following a vrat becomes a task, especially due to our hectic schedules. Thus it is very important to keep having some ‘vrat ka khaana’ that will ensure that neither the fast is broken, nor do we fall sick. To ensure that we don’t fall prey to dehydration, fatigue and dizziness- here is a list of some nutrient rich food items that will keep you energised during the fast. (image credits-istock)

Makhane

Makhana tops the vrat food list in every desi household. It is the ultimate healthy snack to munch on, that one can have even on normal days. Being rich in carbs and proteins, it is perfect to provide you with energy all day long. Makhanas also take care of your blood sugar level while you fast. Fasting often leads to constipation and other digestive issues, the fibrous content of makhana helps the digestive system to work steadily (image credits-istock)

Nimbu Paani

A simple homemade lemonade always comes to the rescue when you feel the dizziness creep in. Lemons are a rich source of Vitamin C, that helps in strengthening the immune system and making it strong enough to withstand fatigue and stress. It also helps in keeping dehydration at bay.
