Mosquitoes in ghee and dead lizard found in dairy items in this city
Authorities recently conducted an inspection at Shakti Milk and Milk Products in Raghunathpally Mandal, Jangaon district, uncovering multiple violations related to hygiene and food safety standards. The findings have raised serious concerns about the facility's compliance with essential health regulations.
During the inspection on February 1, 2025, the State-level Task Force team identified several critical lapses. The Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, reported that food handlers were not following proper sanitary practices during processing and handling. Structural deficiencies, such as a damaged roof and flooring in the cold storage area, were also noted. Inspectors found pests, including house flies and mosquitoes, in stored ghee, while a dead lizard was discovered near food articles. Additionally, spider webs were observed on the roof.
Additional lapses in compliance included the absence of essential records such as pest control logs and water analysis reports. Inspectors also found unclean and rusted equipment, raising concerns about the facility’s maintenance standards. Storage areas were in disarray, with raw food items stacked haphazardly, increasing the risk of contamination. Packaged products were also found to have improper or missing labels, violating food safety regulations.
As a result, the authorities discarded 720 kg of curd that had been contaminated, spoiled, or infested with fungi. Additionally, 1,700 kg of curd was seized over labeling defects and suspected substandard quality.
For a thorough investigation, samples have been collected for laboratory analysis. The Task Force team has confirmed that further action will be taken under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, and the FSS Rules and Regulations, 2011.
The information was shared on the official X(formerly Twitter) page of the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana. The team also shared pictures from their inspection, which showed spoiled, and fungi-ridden food. One user commented, “There are many such plants in the old city where the inspection team never dares to enter.”
Hygiene issues at food establishments in India remain a widespread concern, with frequent reports of violations. Poor sanitation, contaminated ingredients, and regulatory lapses often put public health at serious risk.
