What really happened?

This food scam left the aviation industry shocked after the food scam was unfolded and left everyone amazed. A Chinese man bought a first-class air ticket and rebooked it 300 times to have free meals at the VIP lounge of an airport in the country. This man later took a refund for all the food he had! This may sound bizarre, but it is true.

The scam

This Chinese man was a frequent diner and kept on purchasing the first-class ticket of the Eastern China Airline, which was a fully refundable ticket. He re-booked his ticket over and over again to have free meals at the lounge, so much so that he used the ticket to get access to the Xi'an International Airport's VIP lounge, where high-profile travelers dine for free.

The mind boggling scam

As per a report published in the digital journal in the Chinese language known as Kwong Wah Yit Poh in Malaysia, this man often flashed his ticket to lounge staff at the Shaanxi province airport before his trip, ate a meal just like any other first-class traveler, and instead of getting on the flight, he would get his flight's departure changed to another day. Then, the very next day, he would show up with his newly issued ticket for the revised date, eat and then again change his ticket date. He did this over and over again more than 300 times.

What finally happend?

This scam was revealed when the Eastern China Airlines officials suddenly figured out and understood the scam. The airline officials revealed in their official statement that legal action would be taken against the man, but unfortunately it was not possible as it was not against the rules, as mentioned in the New York Daily News report. Eastern China Airlines officials confronted him and banned him from continuing this practice. Lastly, as per the rules, he finally got a full refund on his refundable ticket and got back all his money.

Not a Scam—Just Smart Use of Airline Policy. Interesting how the media often jumps to a verdict these days. I wouldn’t call this a “scam” at all—everything was done within the airline’s own rules and ticket policies. If this was such an issue, it should’ve been flagged much earlier. Seems like more of a lapse on the airline’s part than anything else. Let’s not blame the passenger for simply using what was available to him.But hey, why investigate when you can just headline it like a courtroom judgment, right?
