Flavours of Lohri to enjoy

India is a land of flavours and festivals. Lohri is one of the iconic festivals that falls in the heart of winter and is celebrated across Punjab and North India. This also marks the end of the winter solstice and the harvesting of rabi crops. Bonfire, folk songs, bhangra, gidda, and flavourful dishes are an integral part of the festival. And when we talk about flavourful dishes, the list is pretty long. Here we have curated a list of 11 must-have Punjabi dishes to celebrate the festival of Lohri.

Sarso Ka Saag aur Makki ki Roti


It's the perfect winter delight made with a mix of saag leaves cooked along with ghee, maize flour, giner, and garlic and served with roti made with maize flour, jaggery, and pickle.

Pindi Chane



This refers to a masala curry made with boiled chickpeas and a mixture of ground spices, ginger and garlic paste, and salt.

Gur ki Roti


It is a sweet delight made with powdered jaggery stuffed in whole-wheat flour dough and cooked on a tawa with enough ghee or oil.

Murmura Laddoo


It is a crunchy and sweet snack made with puffed rice mixed with melted jaggery and seasoned with roasted peanuts and grated ginger.

It is a classic, rich, and nourishing laddoo made with atta, ghee, dry fruits, and gond. It is consumed especially during the winter season to keep the body warm.

It is a savoury classic, where soaked kidney beans are pressure cooked and then simmered in a tomato-onion gravy and is served with steamed rice.

This is a main course dish, where onion pakodas are dunked in a thick curd and besan gravy and simmered along with salt and turmeric. It is tempered with mustard oil, hing, and red chilli powder.

This is a sticky yet crunchy treat made with roasted peanuts and melted jaggery.

This Lohri snack comes in two versions: black and white. Made with black or white sesame seeds and jaggery, this one is considered very nutritious.
