The lesser-known summer fruit of India

All about Ice Apple

It is a fruit with 95% water, rich in electrolytes (potassium, calcium), iron, and Vitamin B-complex, making it a popular natural cooling summer harvest. It is majorly cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar and is a critical source of livelihood for rural communities during the peak season of April-July.

What does the study say?

As per a study published by the National Library of Medicine ice apple fruit pulp extract (IAFPE) preserves the viability of human periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts. The fruit is also a source of vitamins A, B, and C, along with minerals such as zinc, iron, phosphorus, and calcium. These nutrients contribute to various bodily functions, including immune support and bone health.

Benefits of eating Ice Apple: Natural coolant

It is juicy, hydrating and naturally cooling, which soothes the body from within and keeps heat stroke at bay. And as per traditional Indian medicine like Ayurveda and Siddha, ice apple is used to balance excess pitta dosha, which is associated with heat and inflammation. It calms the digestive system, reducing acid reflux, heat-induced indigestion, and irritation. Also, it is naturally low-calorie yet contains vitamins like B-complex and vitamin C, which makes it great for weight management while still nourishing the body.

5/7

Hydrating

It is hydrating because it is composed of 85-90% water, making it a naturally refreshing fruit that helps replenish lost body fluids during hot weather. Ice apple contains vital minerals like potassium and sodium, which help maintain fluid balance in the body. Its cooling nature calms internal heat and keeps your body temperature regulated, which is especially helpful when you're sweating more in summer. Also, it is low in calories and high in water content, which keeps you full without adding extra calories. It’s a great snack option for those looking to manage weight during summer.

Boost digestion

It is rich in fiber, which makes it a gut-friendly fruit as it helps control common digestive issues, especially during summer. It is also said to regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation.
