Indian tiffin recipes with 10+ grams of protein for lasting energy

Most people don’t realise how easy it is to fall short on protein, especially if your meals are mostly rice, roti, or snacks. On average, an adult man needs around 56 grams of protein a day, but most tiffin boxes barely touch that. This often leads to low energy, frequent hunger, and poor focus through the day. Small changes using regular Indian ingredients can help. These simple recipes pack in over 10 grams of protein per serving and still feel homemade, comforting, and tiffin-friendly.

Stuffed moong dal cheela

This soft, savoury pancake is made by grinding soaked moong dal with a bit of ginger and green chilli to make a dosa-like batter. Once cooked on a tawa, it’s filled with a mix of crumbled paneer, onion, and coriander for a tasty and protein-rich bite. A single stuffed cheela can easily offer over 12 grams of protein thanks to both the moong dal and paneer. It’s light on the stomach, easy to pack, and keeps you going for longer without the need to snack again soon.

3/4

Quinoa poha with peanuts

Switching out flattened rice for quinoa instantly boosts the protein content in this classic dish. Cooked quinoa is tossed with mustard seeds, chopped onions, curry leaves, turmeric, and roasted peanuts for a fresh, nutty tiffin that’s full of flavour and texture. A small bowl brings in around 11 grams of protein, coming from both the quinoa and peanuts. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a gluten-free, energy-rich lunch that still tastes familiar.

4/4

Besan and methi thepla rolls

This one’s a popular pick for tiffins. The dough is made with besan, whole wheat flour, fresh methi, curd, and spices, then rolled into thin theplas and cooked on a flat pan. Once ready, they can be spread with curd or wrapped around a spoon of chutney. Thanks to the besan and curd, two medium-sized theplas can give you around 13 grams of protein. They travel well, stay soft, and offer both protein and fibre in every bite.
