Foods to include in your diet for Type 2 diabetes

When it comes to Type 2 diabetes, most people have a misconception that it is a lifelong disease. Well, its time to burst your bubble of myth now as Type 2 diabetes can be completely reversed, with the help of a proper diet and exercise. Deepti Sherawat, a Noida-based Nutritionist, recommends the following food items which must be a part of your diet if you are dealing with Type 2 diabetes.

2/7

Fibrous raw salad

A fibrous diet is necessary for those with Type 2 diabetes. Apart from that, fibre also helps in easing bowel movement and flushes out toxins from the body. You must include a bowl full of raw salad in your daily diet. Your salad can have cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, baby corn and some green leafy veggies like lettuce, spinach and broccoli.

3/7

Fenugreek seeds

Another wonder food for Type 2 diabetes patients are fenugreek seeds, also known as ‘methi dana’. They help in managing diabetes as they are loaded with soluble fibre, which helps in lowering blood sugar by slowing down digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. The easiest way to consume fenugreek seeds is by making its powder and adding it your veggies, dals and curries.

4/7

Jamun (seasonal)

Seasonal Jamun fruit is a must for people with Type 2 diabetes. The fresh fruit increases insulin activity and sensitivity, which not only brings down high blood sugar but also helps in containing it. You can either eat them raw or pair them with a bowl of yoghurt or pudding.

5/7

Cinnamon

A study published in the Diabetes Care journal suggested that cinnamon bark improves blood glucose and cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes. You can easily include cinnamon sticks in your diet by brewing them in water or including in your usual cup of tea.

6/7

Jackfruit flour

Due to its low glycemic index (GI), jackfruit is the perfect substitute of wheat flour. Several studies and researches have also validated the therapeutic potential of jackfruit flour when it comes to Type 2 diabetes. You can easily make chapatis, pancakes, bread and even cookies with this flour.

7/7

What to avoid?

When it comes to the Type 2 diabetes diet, there are several food items you need to immediately eliminate from your diet. Any type of refined flour is a big no in this case. You must also avoid refined foods, such as white bread, pasta, pizzas, white rice and even some canned & processed foods, as they have the potency to trigger your blood sugar levels.
