How to pick perfect avocados each time

Selecting the perfect avocado can elevate your dishes by adding creamy texture and rich flavor. However, choosing an avocado that is just right—neither underripe nor overripe—can sometimes be challenging. With a few simple tips, you can confidently pick avocados at their peak every time, ensuring the best taste and texture for your meals.

2/6

Feel the Weight

A good avocado feels heavy for its size, which indicates that it is fresh and full of creamy flesh. When you hold it, the fruit should feel dense and solid rather than light or hollow. This heaviness often signifies that the avocado has good moisture content inside.

3/6

Check the Ripeness by Touch

Gently squeeze the avocado with your palm, applying light pressure. A perfectly ripe avocado will yield slightly but should not feel mushy or overly soft. If it feels very firm, the avocado is unripe, and if it feels too squishy or leaves indentations, it may be overripe or damaged inside.

4/6

Observe the Skin Color

The skin color can be an important indicator but varies between avocado varieties. For the popular Hass avocado, look for a dark green or almost black color. Bright green skin usually means the avocado needs more time to ripen. However, do consider that some varieties may stay green even when ripe.

5/6

Inspect the Stem Area

Remove the small stem or cap at the top gently. If the skin underneath is green, the avocado is ripe and ready to eat. If it is brown or black, the fruit might be overripe or spoiled. If the stem is difficult to remove, the avocado likely needs more time to mature.

6/6

Avoid Damaged Spots

Always look over the avocado's surface for any bruises, cracks, or dark indentations. These can indicate internal damage that affects taste and texture. Choose fruits with smooth, unblemished skin for the best quality.
