Saffron adulteraton

The winter is in its full swing and Ayurveda says that consumption of cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg, and many other spices is good in this season, as they keep us warm and protect us from bacteria-borne illnesses. But, do you know that even these spices are being adulterated by the market players to keep the demand and supply chain in place. For us as consumers, it is important to understand the side effects of food adulteration and say no to such products. To make it simple for the common man, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has started an initiative on Twitter and is called #DetectingFoodAdulterants. Under this, every week they share a quick test that you can try to check whether your food is adulterated or not. This week, they have shared a test video on how to detect dried tendrils of maize cob in saffron. (Image: istock)
