What happens when you drink lemon water

When it comes to morning drinks, warm lemon water makes for an ideal deal. Made by mixing fresh lemon juice with warm or room-temperature water, it’s known to boost hydration, aid digestion, and support detoxification. Drinking lemon water can help balance pH levels, support hydration, and freshen breath. A 2014 human study on daily lemon ingestion has shown correlations with improved blood pressure levels and increased blood citric acid concentration as well. Despite its acidity, lemon water has an alkalizing effect once metabolized, helping maintain internal balance. Celebrating the popularity of this health drink, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, recently shared a carousel post where he described 8 lesser-known facts about lemon water. Scroll down to read the details.

Hydration gets a boost

As per Dr Saurabh, 75% of adults are chronically dehydrated. Lemon makes water more appealing, which helps digestion, energy, and focus. The vitamin C and natural electrolytes in lemon help restore hydration after workouts or during hot weather, while its mild alkalizing effect supports better metabolism and digestion.

Natural source of vitamin C

He states that one lemon offers 35 mg vitamin C, which is about 40% of our daily needs. It also boosts immunity, collagen, skin health, and iron absorption. This essential vitamin helps the body fight infections, supports collagen production for healthy skin, and promotes faster healing. This vitamin plays a key role in collagen production, helping maintain healthy skin, blood vessels, and cartilage. It also improves the absorption of iron from plant-based foods and protects cells from oxidative stress. Regular consumption may enhance wound healing, strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and support overall cardiovascular health, making lemons a simple yet powerful addition to daily nutrition.

4/9

Support digestion

He also informs that lemon water supports digestion, especially in low stomach acid cases. The mild acidity may stimulate gastric juices and bile flow. Drinking a glass of warm lemon water in the morning can help kick-start the digestive system, relieve bloating, and promote smoother bowel movements. Its natural detoxifying properties also support liver function, helping flush out toxins that may disrupt digestion. Whether enjoyed warm in the morning or sipped throughout the day, this simple drink is a refreshing and effective way to keep your digestion smooth and metabolism active. Drinking warm lemon water before meals can help kickstart digestion, flush out toxins, and promote regular bowel movements.

Warm lemon water is soothing

Yes, he also adds that warm lemon water is soothing. As per his post, vitamin C starts breaking down above 70 degree celsius.

6/9

Watch for reflux

As per Dr Saurabh's post, up to 20% of people with GERD say citrus worsens the symptoms. He suggests avoiding lemon water on an empty stomach, if you notice burning or bloating.

7/9

Take care of your teeth

Lemon juice has a pH of-2 , which is very acidic. He suggests drinking it in one sitting with straw and rinse with plain water. If you enjoy lemon water or citrus-based drinks, it’s best to use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth with plain water afterward. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after consuming lemon, as the enamel is softened by acid and may wear away easily.

8/9

It doesn't detox your body

He clarifies that the internet overhypes it and your kidneys and liver are better detoxifying agents. Lemon water just supports hydration and digestion, gently aiding metabolism, improving nutrient absorption, and refreshing the body naturally. It’s not a miracle cleanse but a simple, refreshing habit that encourages better morning hydration, balances electrolytes, and may mildly support skin health. When paired with balanced meals, sleep, and movement, it becomes a steady, realistic wellness practice - small, consistent, and easy to sustain without any extreme claims or complicated routines.

As per his post, lemon water can be a great gut-friendly ritual to follow, as it supports hydration and digestion and it may benefit the microbiome. One needs to be mindful of reflux and enamel, and it's a great drink to have daily, especially in the morning.

It helps stimulate digestive juices, supports gentle detoxification, and can refresh the system after long hours of rest. Even a small squeeze of lemon in warm or room-temperature water can make a noticeable difference in daily energy and gut comfort. Regular intake may also aid nutrient absorption, reduce bloating, support metabolism, and contribute to a subtle, sustained sense of wellness throughout the day. Additionally, pairing lemon water with a balanced breakfast or herbal teas can enhance overall hydration, improve morning alertness, and reinforce healthy daily routines for long-term digestive health.
