From high vitamin C to lycopene: 5 nutrients in tomatoes that make it a superfood

There’s no denying that tomatoes are an inseparable part of the day-to-day cooking and are extensively used for their enticing sweet, tangy taste, flavour and umpteen health benefits. Interestingly, from soups to ketchups to salads to curries, tomatoes are used in so many different ways, but there’s a lot more to this little fruit that makes it so nutritious and healthy. But do you know, apart from vitamin C and lycopene, there are 5 more nutrients that make tomatoes a superfood for health! Read on to find out…

2/6

Potassium

Tomatoes are rich in potassium, a vital mineral that helps regulate blood pressure, balance fluids, and support muscle and nerve function. A medium tomato contains about 290 mg of potassium, helping to counter the effects of high sodium intake. Add sliced tomatoes to whole-grain dishes, stir-fries, or eat them with avocado for a nutrient-packed snack.

3/6

Folate (Vitamin B9)

Folate is essential for DNA synthesis and repair, making it particularly important during periods of rapid growth, such as pregnancy. Tomatoes offer a good amount of this B-vitamin, which also supports red blood cell formation and heart health. Enjoy them in both raw and cooked dishes—cherry tomatoes in salads or roasted tomatoes with grains and legumes.

4/6

Vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone)

Tomatoes provide vitamin K1, which is important for blood clotting and bone health. A single tomato contributes a modest but meaningful amount to your daily needs. Regular intake supports healthy bones and may reduce the risk of fractures. Pair tomatoes with leafy greens and a drizzle of olive oil to create a bone-supportive meal.

5/6

Chlorogenic Acid

A polyphenol with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it may help lower blood pressure and protect against oxidative stress.

6/6

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Carotenoids are found in tomatoes that support eye health by protecting against age-related macular degeneration and harmful blue light.
