6 foods that may cancel each other’s benefits when eaten together

Just because two foods are healthy doesn’t mean they work well together. Some combinations can actually mess with how your body absorbs nutrients, or leave you feeling bloated and tired instead of energised. You don’t need to overthink every meal — but knowing a few smart food pairings can make a big difference. Scroll down to see which ones to watch out for.

2/8

Spinach and paneer: not the iron boost you think

Spinach is loaded with iron, and paneer is full of calcium — but calcium can actually block iron absorption. So when they show up on the same plate, the benefits get a little diluted. A better idea? Add some lemon juice or tomatoes to your spinach. The vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron properly.

3/8

Curd and sour fruits: gut confusion

Putting dahi and sour fruits like orange or pineapple together might sound tasty, but your stomach won’t love it. It’s not a disaster, but it can leave you feeling kinda heavy and weird for a while. If you’re making a fruit-curd bowl, go with bananas, mangoes, or berries — way easier on the tummy.

4/8

Tea or coffee right after a meal: not ideal

That post-lunch chai might feel comforting, but if you’ve just eaten something rich in iron, it’s not the best move. Tea and coffee have compounds that make it harder for your body to absorb iron. Better to wait a bit and have that cup an hour or so later.

5/8

Fruit after meals: not as light as you think

Having fruit right after a big lunch or dinner might seem healthy, but it can make you feel all bloated and gassy. Fruit digests quicker than cooked food, so it just sits there in your stomach waiting its turn — and that’s when the trouble starts. It’s way better to eat fruit on its own, like in the morning or as an evening snack.

6/8

Citrus and milk: a recipe for discomfort

Orange juice and milk in the morning might seem fine, but the acid in the juice can curdle the milk in your stomach. You’ll probably just feel heavy or not that great after. Better to keep some gap between the two, or just have your juice with toast or a few soaked almonds instead.

7/8

Heavy proteins with heavy carbs: slow digestion

Combos like rajma-chawal or chicken-roti are staples — and super comforting — but they can be hard to digest, especially at night. That’s because proteins and starches need different kinds of digestive environments. For lighter meals, try moong dal with veggies or grilled paneer with sautéed greens.

8/8

Overloaded salads: more isn’t always better

Raw veggies, fruits, cheese, nuts, creamy dressing — throwing all of that into one salad might look great on Instagram, but your stomach’s probably just confused. Too many things at once can slow down digestion and mess with how your body uses the good stuff. Keep it simple. Pick a few things that go well together and let the salad actually work.
