Travel friendly food for road trips

Summer calls for long vacations with family and friends. It is the official holiday season in India as summer vacations are the ideal time to go out and travel. Road trips with friends and family are always fun and more intimate than flights or train journeys. Be it food break at highway dhabas or packed sandwiches from home, road trips without hogging on food continuously feels incomplete. But when one brings packed food for a long road trip, chances are that it might get ruined, especially when the weather doesn’t favour. The summer heat is infamous for spoiling food and here is a list of food items that won’t get spoiled on your next road trip. (image credits-istock)

Chakli

Chaklis are the best snacking option to exist, and one can carry them easily while travelling. This Gujarati snack made up of spiced rice flour, is dry and has a long shelf life. Chaklis don’t go bad easily and remain intact for long when stored in an airtight jar. (image credits-istock)

Muffins

Bake your own batch or get some from the supermarket before leaving for the trip, because muffins always come handy during vacations. Muffins are dry and don’t go bad easily. This sweet treat is also full of carbs that keeps the energy level high throughout the trip. (image credits-istock)

Banana chips

Carrying packets of banana chips is way better than munching on potato chips. These are healthy, tasty and of course, the heat doesn’t affect them. With a shelf life of 2 weeks, banana chips are the ideal snack to pack while on the trip as these will last pretty much throughout the vacation. (image credits-istock)

Sandwiches

Cold sandwiches can sustain much longer than you expect it to be. Fresh, homemade cucumber and cheese sandwiches are the best kind of sandwiches to pack for a long road trip and if you set up on the road early in the morning, these sandwiches can be had for breakfast on the go. Try to avoid soggy, chutney sandwiches and opt for the dry ones, if you plan on having them later, as chances are they might go bad due to moisture. (image credits- istock)

Popcorn

Popcorns make a great snack while on a road trip! One can have a handful, even while driving without making a mess. You can get packed popcorn from the grocery store or just make your own fresh popcorn. Just make sure to store them in airtight containers and keep away from moisture, or else popcorns lose their crunch and turn soggy. (image credits)

Things to keep in mind while packing food

Plan beforehand and make sure you pack enough disposables. Do not carry fragile and brittle food items that have chances of getting squashed. Don’t leave anything for the last moment and pack the food bag the night before. Make sure that the food that you carry doesn’t spill or create a mess and thus, packing dry items is probably the best for the trip. (image credits-istock)
