What is Sukhasana and how is it helpful?

When it comes to living a healthy life, people often think that it involves complicated processes, but according to Celebrity Nutritionist and Author Rujuta Diwekar, it’s the small efforts in our daily lifestyle that leads to big changes, which has been duly mentioned in Ayurveda as ‘Dincharya’ (daily habits)). In her recent Facebook live video, she mentioned about the benefits of sitting in ‘Sukhasna’ (cross-legged) position while eating.

How to sit in Sukhasana position?

Interestingly, she mentions that you can try the posture even while sitting on a dining table. To begin with, you have to follow the routine mentioned below:
Week 1: Sit in sukhasana even when you or sitting on the dining table. Try to do this for only one meal every day.
Week 2: Change the cross of leg.
Week 3: Eat one meal of the day while sitting on the floor.
Week 4: Change the cross of your leg as you eat sitting on the floor.

Better digestion

In her Facebook live video, Rujuta mentions that Sukhasana enables blood flow to the stomach. This facilitates better digestion and assimilation of nutrients. “Your Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, haemoglobin, etc are going to be improved as you will be able to absorb all nutrients from the food that you eat”, she adds.

Increases focus and prevents overeating

The posture aligns the spine and every time you sit cross-legged on floor, you get the perfect square shoulder, which increases your focus on what you are eating and how. This focus helps you control the habit of overeating.

Strengthens lower body

She mentions, “Sitting in cross-legged posture is good for the body's mobility, flexibility, stability and strength of your lower body.”

The sitting and rising test

Eating while sitting in sukhasana is a small effort done daily which can help you build fitness. "In fact, fitness science recognizes the benefits of sitting on floor. They have a sitting and rising test, which is the predictor of your lifespan and for how long you are going to lead an active life," says Rujuta.
In order to check whether you are going right or not, she suggests following the steps as:
Step 1: Stand up and sit down.
Step 2: Work towards getting up without holding anything, without touching your knee down or taking the support of any kind.
Step 3: Repeat again by changing the cross of your leg.
Step 4: Start practicing on a daily basis for better results.
