Auspicious foods for Dhanteras

Diwali festivities have begun and Dhanteras kickstarts the most important festival celebrated in India. This year Dhanteras will be celebrated on November 2. On Dhanteras people buy new utensils, gold, silver, diamond jewellery, as buying these items can attract good luck and wealth. No festival is complete without sweets. Dhanteras too is celebrated by preparing a number of different types of sweets that are said to be quite auspicious when prepared on Dhanteras. ​Lapsi

Lapsi is a popular food item prepared on Dhanteras in the Northern and Eastern areas of India. Also called Atte Ka Halwa, Lapsi has a thinner consistency as compared to the usual Halwa. This sweet dish is prepared with wheat flour, ghee and sugar. Many people add milk instead of water while preparing the dish in order to give it a richer consistency. It is said that this sweet dish symbolizes longevity and attracts blessings on the day of Dhanteras. (image credits- istock)

​Kheel Batashe

Kheel Batashe is an essential part of the Lakshmi Pujan and is widely eaten in North India on Diwali. But do you know why Kheel Batashe are an important part of the Diwali celebration? Kheel is basically a form of paddy (rice) and is harvested just before the festival of Diwali. The first produce of the crop is offered as a bhog to Maa Lakshmi to seek her blessings. ​Naivedya

In Maharashtra, Naivedya is offered to Maa Lakshmi on Dhanteras. It contains a number of different food items that are first offered as a bhog and then distributed among everyone. ​​Panchamrit

Panchamrit is a holy drink made with five ingredients- milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar and is offered as a bhog during Lakshmi Pujan. All the five ingredients used to make Panchamrit hold their unique significance. Milk represents purity and piousness while ghee is for strength and victory. As honey is produced by bees, it stands for dedication and unity. Sugar is about sweetness and bliss, while curd indicates prosperity. The word Panchamrit is made up of two words- ‘Panch’, which means five and ‘Amrit’, which means nectar of immortality. (image credits- istock)

​Boondi Laddoo

During Lakshmi Pujan, both Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped. Since Boondi Laddoo is the favourite mithai of Ganpati, Boondi Laddoos are also offered as a bhog. Offering a bhog of Boondi Laddoo on Dhanteras is quite auspicious as it helps in seeking blessings from Lord Ganesha. (image credits- istock)
