Delhi stands at rank 3 globally on a list for weed consumption!

Recently, we informed you about the dining scenario of Delhi, where a study revealed that Delhiites dine out six times a month. Now, another study is out and the results of which are not very sanguine. Despite weed being illegal in India, Delhi stands at rank 3 globally on a list for weed consumption, consuming 38.3 tons of weed in 2018 alone. Also, Mumbai is ranked at 6th position consuming 32.4 tons of weed last year. The study is conducted by ABCD, a data-driven media campaign outlet based in Germany that seeks to push for legalising cannabis. Read below to know more about the study and its findings.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis refers to a psychoactive drug that comes from the cannabis plant and is used for medical or recreational purposes. Also known as marijuana or charas, it has mental and physical effects like stoned feeling, change in perception, heightened the mood, and an increase in appetite.

Weed industry in Delhi and Mumbai

As per the report, the ABCD 2018 index shows that Delhi, Mumbai consume 38.3 tons and 32.4 tons of cannabis respectively. Cannabis is sold at Rs 315 per gram in Delhi and Rs 329 per gram in Mumbai, which are the cheapest rates in the world. It is surprising to know that even though it is not legal in India, Delhi and Mumbai figure among the highest 10 cities in the world. While Delhi consumes 38,260 kg of weed, Mumbai consumes 32380 kg.

The study

One of the agendas of the survey was to study the average price at which cannabis is being sold in these cities, and it was found that both Indian cities are one of the cheapest places to buy cannabis. The price in Delhi was $4.38 per gram (INR 315) and in Mumbai was $4.57 per gram (INR 328). The most expensive place to buy weed is Tokyo, at $32.66 per gram (INR 2,348).
5/6

It’s legal or not?

The use and cultivation of cannabis are illegal in many parts of the world, it is still being used for spiritual purposes. It has also been proven that there is a strong correlation between cannabis use and the risk of psychosis. The use of cannabis is supervised in India, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
6/6

What if cannabis was legal?

The study also provides the implications of legalising weed in India. It says that if it would have been legal, Delhi could stand to raise Rs 725 crores and Mumbai could generate Rs 641 crores. Keeping the average US tax rate in mind, Delhi and Mumbai could raise Rs 225 crore and Rs 199 crore respectively.
