License suspended over poor hygiene!

One of the differences between eating at a restaurant and at a roadside eatery is their hygiene levels. Wonder, if the former fails to maintain the same, what will be the difference between the two? Something similar happened with Chennai’s famous Murugan Idli Shop that found itself in a soup recently, after the suspension of its license over poor hygiene and sanitation conditions. The Food Safety Department of Tamil Nadu has suspended the license of the central kitchen of Chennai’s popular restaurant chain that supplies food to over 20 outlets of the restaurant across Chennai.

What did officials say?

According to the Tiruvallur division of the Department of Food Safety and Drugs Administration, the license of Murugan Idli’s central kitchen was suspended on September 10, as the restaurant, failed to address the hygiene issues raised under the Food Safety Act in the recent past. If reports are to be believed they had brought the issue to the restaurant’s attention 40 days ago and they were asked to rectify the same. Later, a show-cause notice was issued to the manager, but he failed to submit the report. As a result, they had to suspend the operations of the restaurant.

What were the hygiene issues?

During the observation period, it was found that the restaurant failed to maintain basic hygiene and sanitation rules. For a longer period, they had not conducted a periodical medical check-up of the staff. In the kitchen, there were no caps and gloves for kitchen staff, no pest control, white-washing of walls, repairing broken flooring, mishandling of items in storage and maintenance of dish-washer.

What’s more?

In the meantime, Chennai’s division of the Department of Food Safety and Drugs Administration has issued a notice under Section 55 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to an outlet of the restaurant chain Parrys after a customer complained about a worm in his food last week. This came to light when the manager couldn’t handle the complaint and the customer filed a complaint with the officials of the food safety department.

Bottomline

This is an alarm for all the hospitality brands, who are taking hygiene concerns lightly. As far as Murugan’s licence revoking is concerned, nothing has been officially announced yet.
