Chabeel: Its history and recipe

Chabeel is a chilled pink drink that kind strangers offer us on a sunny summer afternoon while driving for some work or returning back from the school. People often install stalls by the roadside and fill tubs with this refreshing drink. They offer it to every passerby, especially during hot summer days. Ever wondered what it actually is and who these kind humans are? Here is everything you need to know about Chabeel and its history. (image credits-istock)

History of Chabeel

Chabeel is a sweet non-alcoholic energy Punjabi drink that the Sikh community has been kindly offering to the public since centuries to pay their respect to the 5th Sikh guru, Guru Arjun Dev Ji. It was he, who taught the Sikhs to accept God's will as blessings and sweets. Guru Arjun Dev Ji, was punished when he refused to follow the orders of the Mughals. Hot sand was poured over him while he burned, sitting on a red-hot plate. The Sikh community honours the Guru’s martyrdom by offering Chabeel to the needy on hot summer afternoons.

A healthy drink

In the scorching heat of June, a glass of Chabeel surely acts as a blessing when it is handed over to you suddenly on your way to work. This coolant not only cools down, but also gives energy. Chabeel with its cooling properties helps control the body temperature and even takes care of the digestive system. The drink helps reduce uric acid and is a cure for bloating. Many people also get this Chabeel filled in their water bottles and carry it with them.

How to make it

Making Chabeel is very easy. All you need to have is milk, chilled water, rose syrup and most importantly- a big, caring heart full of love.

The key to make the perfect Chabeel is to add 80% percent water and 20% milk. This coolant should be cold and watery. Use Rooh Afza in the recipe as it is the most common rose syrup available in the market. Stir all the ingredients in a large pot with a big smile and voila! Your Chabeel is ready. Add some ice cubes and serve chilled.

Boycott rooh afza. The earnings from rooh afza sales is used to pelt stones. There a lot of alternatives. Dabur, Patanjali etc. Almost everyone has zillions of alternative
