Plastic wrap, an essential kitchen item

One of the most important lessons taught to everyone in order to save the environment is the three Rs rule, which stands for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This rule is applied to a variety of items, particularly plastic wares so that the risk to the environment is reduced and an item doesn’t lose its usability after just one use.

Plastic wrap is a very common item that we use in our kitchen. It is a much-needed commodity for practically every kitchen. It’s essential for refrigerated leftovers, preventing freezer burn and making homemade pudding. However, has it ever occurred to you whether it is reusable or not?

2/4

Can it be reused?

Yes, plastic wrap can be reused. If it is not soiled or dirty, it is perfectly fine to use it again. Also, plastic wrap lasts for a really long time. If you look at its packaging closely, there is no expiration date printed on it. However, there might be chances that an old plastic wrap becomes too sticky to use.

3/4

Ways to reuse plastic wrap

In case you are a cleanliness freak and don’t want to use the plastic wrap on leftovers, here are a few ways to use them.

1. If your bananas are mushy, try wrapping the stems in plastic wrap. It slows down the process and keeps them fresh.

2. Cover ice cream with a piece of plastic wrap, then top with the lid. The layer of plastic will prevent ice from crystallizing on the surface.

3. Wrap your wet paintbrush with plastic wrap and it will prevent the paint from drying out until you are ready to paint again.

4. Before packing your shampoo or other liquids while travelling, take the lid off, cover the opening with plastic wrap, and then screw on the lid. The layer of plastic creates another barrier against leaks.

Alternatives to plastic wraps

There is no doubt about the fact that since plastic takes so long to decompose and break down, it is not good for the environment. Because of this, a lot of used plastic ends up in landfills and oceans. As per environmentalists, the best thing to do is to stop the use of any kind of plastic altogether. So here are a few alternatives to plastic wraps.

1. Purchase glass storage containers and jars to stack away your leftovers.

2. Many environmental friendly wraps are now available in the market made from beeswax, organic cotton, jojoba oil, and tree resin. Thus look for sustainable wraps rather than the plastic ones.

3. Pick up a set of silicone bowl covers to cover a dish you want to keep in the fridge or save for later.
