Can drinking raw ginger water in monsoons heal respiratory issues?
The monsoon season often brings with it an increase in respiratory infections due to sudden weather changes, high humidity, and the spread of airborne pathogens. During this time, natural remedies like raw ginger water have gained popularity for their potential to support lung health and reduce respiratory discomfort. Ginger, with its rich anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, is widely used in Ayurveda and folk medicine to treat cough, cold, sore throat, and even bronchial irritation.
Why ginger?
Ginger contains active compounds like gingerol, shogaol, and zingerone, which help reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract. These compounds can loosen mucus, ease congestion, and soothe inflamed airways—making ginger water a simple, accessible home remedy. Drinking warm raw ginger water early in the morning during monsoons may help prevent common seasonal infections like allergic rhinitis, bronchitis, and throat irritation.
In addition to relieving symptoms, ginger may also enhance overall immune response. A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2008) found that fresh ginger extract exhibited strong antiviral activity against the human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), particularly in the early stages of infection. The study suggested that fresh ginger stimulates mucosal cells to secrete interferon-beta, a protein that helps defend against viral infections in the lungs.
How to make ginger water
Making raw ginger water is simple. Just grate a small piece of fresh ginger (around 1–2 inches), add it to a cup of warm water, and let it steep for 5–10 minutes. You may optionally add a dash of lemon juice or honey for additional benefits. This drink can be consumed once or twice a day, preferably in the morning or after meals during the monsoon months. While ginger water can support respiratory health and immunity, it should not replace medical treatment for chronic or severe conditions like asthma, pneumonia, or COVID-related symptoms. However, for minor respiratory complaints commonly seen during the monsoon, it can act as a preventive and healing tonic when consumed regularly in moderation.
