Of late, many people have started taking this theory seriously and considering drinking caffeine first thing in the morning. Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and certain beverages and is known for its ability to enhance alertness and kick-start the central nervous system. Beyond its well-established role as a morning pick-me-up, caffeine has also been associated with stimulating bowel movements. Several nutritionists agree that caffeine stimulates the colon muscles, leading to increased contractions. This heightened activity can prompt a bowel movement, providing a sense of relief for those who may experience occasional constipation. However, it's essential to note that individual responses to caffeine can vary.

As per Delhi-based Clinical Nutritionist Kashika Bhatia, who is also the founder of Nutriguide Clinic, “Coffee's caffeine increases the anus pressure and colon muscle activity, which heightens the need to poop. Coffee includes acids that have been demonstrated to increase the hormone gastrin levels, which in turn cause your stomach's involuntary spasms to move the bowels. This phenomenon is observed in both ordinary and decaffeinated coffee. Additionally, studies show that coffee stimulates the production of cholecystokinin, another hormone important for digestion.”

Coffee as a mild laxative

Coffee, in particular, has earned a reputation as a mild laxative. The combination of caffeine and certain compounds in coffee can contribute to increased muscle activity in the colon. This mild laxative effect is often why some individuals find relief after their morning cup of coffee.

Shikha Agarwal, Nutritionist and Founder of Nurture shares, "Coffee's association with increased bowel movements is well-documented. Research reveals that coffee, not solely caffeine, triggers recto-sigmoid motor activity, inducing the urge to defecate. The swift response, within minutes of consumption, implies an indirect action on the colon, possibly through stomach or small bowel receptors. Gastrin and possibly cholecystokinin mediate this 'gastrocolonic response,' while exorphines in coffee could influence colonic motility. Studies confirm coffee's effect on rectosigmoid motor activity, irrespective of caffeine content, supporting its role in bowel stimulation. Understanding these mechanisms illuminates the intricate relationship between dietary habits and gastrointestinal function."

While caffeine may play a role in promoting bowel movements, it's crucial to consider hydration levels. Caffeine is known to have a diuretic effect, potentially leading to increased urine production and the loss of fluids. Staying adequately hydrated is essential to counterbalance this effect and support overall digestive health.

Twincy Ann Sunil, Clinical Nutritionist & Dietitian at the Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bengaluru feels, "Caffeine can have a mild laxative effect in some people. It stimulates the muscles of the digestive system, colon muscle activity and increases pressure in the anus, which can lead to an increased desire to have a bowel movement. However, this effect varies from person to person and is not a reliable option to induce bowel movements. While some people may experience this benefit, others may not notice a change in their bowel habits. It is important to consume caffeine in moderation, as excessive consumption can cause negative health effects. If you are constipated, it is best to have a fibre-rich diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Include a wide variety of fibre-rich foods like oats, peas, beans, green leafy vegetables, carrots etc. can help in maintaining better bowel health."
