Are rice bugs infectious? How to remove them from rice?

In most traditional households, cleaning and sorting rice has been a part of the culture; this is majorly done to remove waste particles, insects and grain beetles, to name a few. In fact, with increasing humidity and moisture in the air, much like other grains, rice too is prone to rice bugs and an increase in infectants. However, the question that arises is, is it actually infectious and bad for health? Let’s find out…

2/4

What exactly are these bugs? Are they harmful?

Rice bugs, commonly known as weevils or grain beetles, are often found in rice and may also develop over time when exposed to moisture. These are tiny insects that infest grains such as rice, wheat, and lentils during storage. However, these grains do not cause infections like bacteria or viruses, and their presence is a sign of poor storage hygiene or contaminated food products. But these bugs are not infectious, but eating them can alter the taste of the rice.

Are rice bugs harmful to health?

Surprisingly, the rice bugs are not infectious and do not carry diseases that infect humans. However, eating infected rice regularly may not be a great idea as it may cause rare food allergies. In fact, in case of maximum infestations, rice may also lose its nutritional value and absorb an unpleasant odor, making it unfit for cooking.

4/4

How to remove these bugs

There are several easy ways to remove rice bugs:

This is the age-old way of removing bugs from rice, just spread it under direct sunlight for a few hours to kill and drive out the bugs.

Another way of removing the bugs is by placing the rice in a freezer for 3–4 days to kill any hidden larvae or eggs.

Use a fine sieve to shake out the bugs or gently hand-pick them if the infestation is light. You can also add bay leaves, cloves, neem leaves, or garlic cloves to repel any remaining bugs naturally.
