How to drink tea right at home

In India, tea is not just a beverage; it's a lifestyle ritual, and many people love to begin the day with it. But did you know that drinking tea on an empty stomach is not good for gut and liver health? In a recent post on Instagram, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, shared some tea-related habits, which are not good for gut and liver health. According to Saurabh, one should drink tea in moderation and should also be mindful of caffeine content and timing. Scroll down to read the details.

Tea on an empty stomach


It irritates the stomach lining, leads to reflux, nausea, and discomfort.

Sugar and sweetened teas


As per Saurabh, iced teas or milk teas can pack 30-40 g of sugar, leading to fatty liver and diabetes risk.

Overdoing green tea extract


Excessive intake of green tea supplement, not brewed tea is linked to rare but real liver toxicity.

Detox or slimming tea


These teas often lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and may cause gut damage in the long run.

Super hot tea


As per Saurabh, drinking super hot tea or anything above 65° C can increase the risk of esophageal cancer in studies.

Late night chai or green tea


If you consume tea at night, caffeine lingers for hours in the body, disrupts sleep, which further impacts liver health.

Boba/bubble tea overload

These teas are loaded with sugar and starchy pearls, which have hidden calories, leading to insulin resistance and fatty liver.
