Indian rotits and their benefits

Roti, or phulka, is an Indian staple. From whole wheat to millets, different types of grains are used to make rotis across the country. But have you ever thought about the calories these types of roti offer? In a recent video on Instagram, Gunjan Taneja, a health and wellness expert, talked about 7 types of roti enjoyed in India, their calories, and the benefits they offer. Whole Wheat Roti


Whole wheat contains dietary fiber, especially insoluble fiber from the bran, which aids digestion and promotes bowel regularity. Per serving of whole wheat roti which is around 40 gms offers 120 calories. As per Gunjan, this roti offers balanced nutrition and sustained energy.

Jowar Roti


Jowar, also known as sorghum millet, is a highly nutritious gluten-free grain packed with protein, calcium, iron, and potassium. A serving of 40 gms offers 100 calories. In her video, Gunjan says that this roti has rich fiber content which aids gut and digestive health.

Makka Roti


It is rich in antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, and per serving of 40 gms offers 110 calories. This roti helps stabilise blood sugar levels, states Gunjan.

Ragi Roti


Ragi is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and dietary fiber, along with key micronutrients such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and B-complex vitamins and per serving of ragi roti offers 90 calories. This roti is high in calcium which boosts bone health and is a must-have for women of all age groups, informs Gunjan in her video.

Bajra Roti


Bajra, also known as pearl millet, is rich in protein and also contains essential vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, iron, and folate. Per serving of 40 gms offers 105 calories. This roti is rich in iron and helps prevent anemia and keeps the body warm during winter months, informs Gunjan.

Besan Roti

Besan is rich in plant-based protein and is also rich in dietary fiber.
Per serving of 40 gms offers 115 calories. This roti is rich in protein and helps with muscle recovery, she states.

Oats Roti


Oats are rich in fiber, especially a soluble fiber called beta-glucan, antioxidants like avenanthramides, vitamins, and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and per serving of 40 gms offer 95 calories. This roti is rich in beta-glucan, that aids heart health and helps reduce cholesterol levels, concludes Gunjan.
