How foods boost gut and bone health

With growing age, the gut and bones need extra in terms of smooth functioning. And the best way to do so is to indulge in physical activities and eat a nutrient-rich diet that soothes the gut and helps strengthen the bones. Addressing the issues of gut and bone health, Dr. Karan Rajan, NHS surgeon and health content creator, recently shared a list of foods lying silently in your kitchen that can help boost well-being through natural prebiotics. Scroll down to read the details.

Bananas

According to Dr Karan, if you eat bananas, you get fructooligosaccharides, a prebiotic that improves calcium absorption in your colon, which can support bone health over time.

3/8

Cooked and cooled potato

He also suggests adding cooked and cooled potatoes in daily diet. According to Dr Karan, if you eat cooked and cooled potatoes, you get more resistant starch, a prebiotic that improve insulin sensitivity and appetite regulation.

4/8

Apples

According to Dr Karan, if you eat apples, you get pectin, a soluble prebiotic that improves bowel motions. Also, apples are a natural source of boron, a trace mineral that helps the body retain calcium and magnesium, essential for maintaining strong bones.

5/8

Oats

He also states that if you eat oats, you get prebiotic beta-glucan, which can trap cholesterol in your small intestine and, over time, help reduce LDL cholesterol. Oats are also a good source of magnesium, a vital mineral that helps in the formation of bone matrix and improves calcium absorption.

6/8

Chickpeas

In the video Dr Karan explained that if you eat chickpeas, you get a natural source of galactooligosaccharides, a prebiotic that can improve magnesium absorption and fuel the growth of lactobacilli.

7/8

Garlic and onions

As per Dr Karan, if you eat garlic and onions, this double prebiotic fiber broadens the range of beneficial microbes that are fueled.

8/8

Sunflower seeds

"If you eat sunflower seeds, you get lignans and cellulose, which can help bulk up your stool, and aid gut health," Dr Karan concludes.
