7 common breakfasts that cause acidity

Breakfast options you need to avoid!

We have all felt the burning sensation in our food pipe and chest when the contents start to rise up from our stomach at some point. This happens when an acidic environment is created in our stomach, causing acid reflux and heartburn. Did you know that there are certain foods that can trigger this painful and uncomfortable condition? Consistently eating such foods can cause acidity to become serious and long-lasting, taking the form of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Gastroesophageal reflux or acidity that causes burning sensation in your throat happens when the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, allowing the stomach's contents to flow up into the esophagus. Lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a bundle of muscles at the lower end of the esophagus, where it joins the stomach.

Here are 7 breakfast options that may cause acidity-

2/8

Peanut Butter Toast

Since peanuts are so high in fat, they make your LES become lazy. If you are having peanut butter with your toast every morning, you are clocking in a huge amount of saturated fats that are contributing to acidity and heartburn. Almond butter is a good replacement for peanut butter if you want something low-fat that would save you from acidity in the morning.

3/8

Scrambled Eggs

Did you know that your morning ritual of having scrambled eggs is hurting your LES? Eggs are on the top in the list of foods causing most allergies. This means that many people can be allergic to eggs, thus causing acidity as a side effect. For people with extreme gastric issues, it is recommended to stick to egg whites and skip the yolks.

4/8

Tomatoes

Whether you are having a salad, an omelette or a BLT sandwich, tomatoes have been a part of breakfast routine for a long time. However, adding tomatoes to your breakfast may subject you to acid reflux owing to their highly acidic nature. The acidity of tomatoes is increased especially when consumed on an empty stomach. Thus, even though tomatoes are extremely healthy, it is a good idea to skip it at breakfast.

5/8

Cookies & Brownies

Many people like having a cup of tea or coffee with their favourite cookies or brownies for breakfast. But these ingredients mix up to make a really acidic environment in your stomach. Dairy and caffeine from the tea or coffee are combined with flour and refined sugar from the cookies and brownies, causing acidity. Store-bought cookies and brownies also have additives, artificial flavours and preservatives, making things worse.

6/8

Bacon

Bacon might be a yummy addition to your breakfast but it does not treat your oesophagus well. Pork is high in fat content, which is difficult for the digestive system to process. As a result, bacon stays inside the stomach walls for an extended period of time, causing acidity. Bacon is also high in salt, contributing to a number of other health problems.

7/8

Hot Dogs

Hot dogs are a popular breakfast option mainly because they are easy to grab on the go. But did you know that they are one of the biggest culprits of acidity? They contain sausage, that are hard to digest and can slow down your metabolism, causing acid reflux by increasing acid generation in the stomach as lower esophagal sphincter (LES) relaxes.

8/8

Bread & Jam

Bread and jam is one of the go-to breakfasts worldwide. With a pH level of 5.5, jellies and jams have been ranked as some of the worst foods for acid reflux. Apart from that, they are ridden in sugar and served with the nutritionally empty white bread, this makes for a bad breakfast. Have an alkaline fruit like strawberries or bananas instead of jam in your morning sandwich.
