How some foods help reduce uric acid levels

For the unversed, uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, which are found in foods like red meat, seafood, and alcohol. The kidneys filter and remove uric acid through urine. However, when the body produces too much or the kidneys fail to eliminate it properly, uric acid levels rise, leading to health issues like joint pain, kidney stones, kidney damage, inflammation, joint stiffness, metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity, and more. It is said that leading a healthy lifestyle and eating the right foods can help reduce uric acid naturally. As per Harvard Health Publishing, vitamin C may lower uric acid levels. Also, people with gout may be helped by adding citrus fruits and other foods rich in vitamin C (such as strawberries and peppers) to their diet. Some evidence suggests that eating cherries can reduce gout attacks and improve pain. The study says that while these findings are not conclusive, adding cherries to your diet is safe. Take a look at the 5 vegetarian foods that can help in reducing uric acid naturally.

2/6

Cherries

Cherries contain anthocyanins, which block uric acid production and help the body eliminate excess uric acid. Also, these compounds also reduce inflammation in the joints, preventing pain and swelling.Cherries also act as a natural diuretic, helping the kidneys filter and remove uric acid efficiently. And cherries have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce pain and swelling in joints and help in faster recovery from gout attacks. The vitamin C in cherries helps break down and eliminate uric acid. As per a study by the National Library of Medicine, there is an association between cherry intake and a reduced risk of gout attacks.

Lemon

Citrus fruits like lemons are rich in vitamin C, which helps lower uric acid levels by boosting kidney function. They are said to help dissolve uric acid crystals in the joints, preventing gout attacks. Lemons are super effective in alkalizing the body, while oranges are high in vitamin C and are hydrating, and sweet lime is said to be gentle on digestion while reducing uric acid. Also, citrus fruits contain natural citrates, which prevent uric acid buildup in the kidneys. They also help flush out excess uric acid through urine, reducing the risk of kidney stones. As per a study by the BMJ Journals, lemon juice stimulates the formation of calcium carbonate released by the pancreas and aids in alkalization of the blood and urine, neutralizing acids such as uric acid. It also said that lemon water may be a useful adjuvant in the treatment of patients with gout.

4/6

Cucumber

Hydrating vegetables like cucumber are high in water content, low in purines, and are packed with essential nutrients, making them effective in flushing out excess uric acid. As per a study by the International Journal of Basic, Applied and Innovative Research, cucumber consumption could be of importance in prevention and management of diabetes mellitus. Also, veggies like zucchini and tomatoes, help prevent uric acid buildup, reducing the risk of gout and kidney stones. It is also said that hydrating veggies help alkalize the body, and further neutralize uric acid. Rich in antioxidants and silica, they help improve skin texture and reduce puffiness. They also contain potassium, which helps manage blood pressure and supports cardiovascular health.

5/6

Green tea

As per a study by the National Library of Medicine, green tea extract may modestly lower SUA level and decrease uric acid clearance. Green tea extract also significantly elevates serum antioxidant capacity with a positive dosage effect. It is also a natural detoxifier that helps regulate uric acid levels by boosting metabolism, improving kidney function, and reducing inflammation. It contains Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant that reduces uric acid production. And green tea’s polyphenols reduce joint inflammation and swelling caused by high uric acid (gout). It is also known to have an alkalizing effect, which helps balance uric acid in the body. It contains caffeine and L-theanine too, which together can boost focus and keep you alert.

6/6

Flaxseeds

Flax Seeds are a superfood known for their anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. They can help reduce uric acid levels naturally by reducing inflammation in joints caused by high uric acid (gout). They also help prevent crystal formation in joints, reducing pain and swelling. Flaxseeds also contain lignans & fiber, which support kidney health and help in flushing out excess uric acid through urine. Soluble fiber in flaxseeds helps bind uric acid in the gut, preventing absorption into the bloodstream. As per a study by the National Library of Medicine flaxseed meal lowers uric acid. And since cholesterol, triglyceride, and uric acid are separate risk factors for heart-related problems, the research showed that both flaxseed meal and soy protein may have positive effects. However, which specific compound(s) in flaxseed meal or soybean are responsible for these effects still need to be found.
