5 types of must-try Dosa fillings apart from aloo

Super easy stuffings to use in Dosa

Dosa is one of the most popular dishes from South India that is consumed for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Made with simple ingredients like rice and urad dal, Dosa is best enjoyed with sambhar and coconut chutney on the side. The taste and experience of eating Dosa multiplies when it is stuffed with a filling. Aloo is the most common filling that is used to make Masala Dosa. If you too love Dosa, but wish to try something unique, here are five types of Dosa stuffings that you must try. (all image credits-istock)

Paneer Masala

Ingredients required- 100 grams paneer, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 1 onion, 1 tomato, 1 green chilli, 2 tbsp coriander leaves, ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp red chilli powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ¼ tsp garam masala, 1 tbsp oil and salt as per taste.
Method-
In a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter for a few seconds.
Now add finely chopped onion and green chilli. Let them cool till the colour changes to golden brown.
Now add finely chopped tomato along with salt. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
Add all the spices like turmeric, coriander powder, red chilli powder, garam masala and give a mix.
Crumble the paneer or grate it. Add it to the pan as well. Adjust the salt as per taste.
Toss well and add coriander leaves. Cook for one last minute and your Paneer Masala filling is ready.

Egg filling

Ingredients required- 1 egg, 1 tbsp chopped onion, 1 tbsp chopped tomato, ¼ tsp black pepper powder, ¼ tsp red chilli powder, 1 tbsp coriander leaves, 1 tbsp oil and salt as per taste.
Method-
Add a ladleful of batter on the dosa pan and spread in circular motions to make a dosa.
Let it cook for a minute.
Crack open an egg in a bowl. Add onion, tomato, coriander leaves, black pepper powder, red chilli powder and salt. Give a light whisk.
Add this mixture carefully on the dosa and let it cook for a minute or so.
Now flip it towards the other side and let it cook until done.
Egg Dosa is now ready to be served.

​Vegetable filling

Ingredients required- ½ capsicum, ½ carrot, ½ onion, ¼ cup cabbage, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, ¼ tsp turmeric, ¼ tsp coriander powder, ¼ tsp red chilli powder, 1 tbsp coriander leaves, 1 tbsp oil and salt.
Method-
Heat oil in a pan.
Add finely chopped onion, carrot, cabbage, capsicum and ginger garlic paste.
Keep the flame high and toss for a minute.
Now add salt, turmeric, coriander powder, red chilli powder and coriander leaves.
Cook for two minutes and switch off the flame.
Your vegetable filling is now ready to be used.

Cheese

Ingredients required- 1 tbsp onion, 1 tbsp tomato, ½ tsp red chilli powder, 1 cheese slice or 1 cheese cube and salt as per taste.
Method-
Add a ladleful of batter on the dosa pan and spread in circular motions to make a dosa.
Now add finely chopped onion and tomato on it. Sprinkle salt and red chilli powder and gently mix.
Spread the mixture on the whole dosa.
Now grate the cheese cube on the dosa or tear the slice and spread it all over the dosa.
Let it cook for two minutes or until the cheese melts completely.
Cheese Dosa is now ready to be served.

Noodles

Ingredients required- 1 cup boiled noodles, 1 onion, ½ capsicum, ½ carrot, ¼ cup cabbage, 2 garlic cloves, 1 tbsp schezwan chutney, 1 tbsp ketchup, 1 tbsp soya sauce, 1 tbsp vinegar and salt as per taste.
Method-
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add minced garlic and let them saute for a few seconds.
Now add sliced onions and cook on high heat for a minute.
Add chopped carrot, cabbage and capsicum. Add salt and cook on high heat for another minute.
Now add schezwan chutney, ketchup, soya sauce and vinegar. Mix and cook for 2 minutes.
Lastly, add boiled noodles and toss to mix all the ingredients.
Noodle filling is now ready to be stuffed in dosas.
