Benefits of papaya seeds

Papaya is well-known as a gut-friendly superfood, but did you know its seeds are equally powerful — packed with nutrients that can significantly enhance overall health? As per a study published by the National Library of Medicine, papaya seeds possess robust antioxidant properties that can protect cells from oxidative stress-induced apoptosis. An investigation revealed that the antioxidant activity of papaya seed extract could prevent cell death caused by hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress . Additionally, aqueous extracts of papaya seeds have shown significant protective effects against chemically induced liver toxicity by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in hepatocytes. Another study titled Papaya improves non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese rats by attenuating oxidative stress, inflammation and lipogenic gene expression, says that papaya seeds may have hepatoprotective effects. In animal models, papaya seed extracts ameliorated liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄), a chemical known to cause liver toxicity. The extracts improved liver histoarchitecture and reduced markers of liver injury. Scroll down to find out the lesser-known benefits of consuming papaya seeds.

Parasite cleanser

Papaya seeds contain carpaine, an alkaloid that helps eliminate intestinal worms and parasites. Traditionally, the seeds are also used in natural deworming remedies. The seeds fight bacteria and fungi in the gut, helping create a clean, balanced digestive environment.

Detox liver

As per Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, papaya seeds help detoxify the liver, support regeneration, and improve overall liver function. They contain polyphenols and flavonoids that help protect liver cells from oxidative damage and inflammation. Also, certain compounds in papaya seeds may aid in the repair and regeneration of damaged liver tissue. Some studies suggest that papaya seed extracts may help in detoxifying the liver, especially in cases of fatty liver and liver cirrhosis. Consuming them in small, controlled amounts—either raw, dried, or powdered—can gently support liver health and overall detoxification.

Aid in digestion

As per experts, enzymes in papaya seeds like papain help break down proteins and support better digestion, reducing bloating and indigestion. They also have mild laxative effects that help cleanse the digestive tract and promote regular bowel movements. They are also great for calming gastritis, acid reflux, or an irritated stomach lining thanks to their anti-inflammatory compounds. Their antibacterial and antifungal properties help keep harmful bacteria in check without disturbing beneficial microbes. Just a small amount — about 5–10 seeds — can be chewed or ground into smoothies to boost digestive health naturally. Papaya seeds are nature’s little detoxifiers for a healthier gut.

5/6

Anti-bacterial properties

A study published in the “Journal of Medicinal Plants Research” showed papaya seed extract had strong antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains. The antimicrobial properties also help fight bad breath, gum infections, and dental plaque. However, in cases of excessive conditions it is best to consume papaya in moderation. It works by damaging bacterial cell walls and inhibiting their growth. Studies have shown papaya seed extracts to be effective in inhibiting the growth of staph infections, typhoid-causing bacteria, and intestinal pathogens

Good for kidney health

Papaya seeds are also said to help flush out toxins from the kidneys and urinary tract, supporting kidney filtration function and reducing toxic buildup. They may help lower uric acid levels in the body, reducing strain on kidneys and helping prevent issues like gout or kidney stones. The seeds also contain anti-inflammatory compounds that can calm inflamed kidney tissue or urinary pathways.
