5 facts you must know before switching to plant-based Soy milk

With increasing inclination towards health and fitness, people are gradually moving towards healthier choices. Interestingly, one such fad among health enthusiasts is opting for plant-based milk like soy milk, oat milk, and nut milk, to name a few. In fact, among all the lactose-free and low-fat milk varieties, soy milk was the first vegan milk to capture the market and is still very popular among fitness enthusiasts, but is soy milk actually good, or are there some downsides to this plant-based milk? Well, here’s a lowdown on soy milk and 5 facts that you must know before drinking soy milk.

2/5

Affects thyroid functioning

While it is believed to be a healthy source of protein, this plant-based milk may not be a perfect drink for everyone. This is because soy contains compounds called goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid function by disrupting iodine uptake. While moderate consumption is generally safe for most people, those with thyroid issues, especially hypothyroidism, must check their soy intake. Cooking soybeans reduces goitrogen levels, but soy milk might still have an effect if consumed in large quantities.

3/5

High in Isoflavones

Soy milk is rich in isoflavones, which are plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. While this can be beneficial in helping with menopausal symptoms, bone health, and heart health, excessive consumption might affect hormone balance, especially in people with hormone-sensitive conditions. However, moderate intake is usually safe and even beneficial for most.

4/5

Not all soy milks are healthy

Not all soy milk brands are the same. Some contain added sugars, artificial flavors, or thickeners, which can diminish its health benefits. Always check the label for added sugars, preservatives, and fortifications like calcium and vitamin D. Opt for unsweetened, organic versions whenever possible to get the maximum nutritional value.

5/5

May contain allergens

While soy milk is a great alternative for people avoiding dairy, it’s also one of the top eight allergens. Individuals with soy allergies can experience reactions ranging from mild discomfort to severe anaphylaxis. Additionally, soy is often genetically modified (GMO), which can be a concern for some people. Look for non-GMO or organic certifications if this is important to you.
