1/6

The right way to eat curd

Curd, also known as dahi, is known for its probiotic properties and is a staple in Indian households. Mostly consumed as a side dish or as a drink, it is made by fermenting milk with natural bacteria. It is a rich source of calcium, protein, and beneficial microbes that support gut health and digestion. According to Ayurveda, it is heavy, sour, and heating in nature, and hence it should be consumed in moderation. Traditionally, it is best paired with spices like black pepper or roasted cumin, as it helps enhance digestion and reduces its mucus-forming tendencies. Due to its versatility in Indian households, it is often paired wrong and might result in health issues. Hence, here we have curated a list of common mistakes one should avoid while eating curd. Take a look.

2/6

Eating curd at night

As per Ayurveda, curd at night is not a healthy habit. Curd can increase mucus production and may aggravate cold or sinus issues, if eaten after sunset, especially for those prone to respiratory issues.

3/6

Mixing curd with fruits

This might sound very English and exotic, but combining curd with sour or citrus fruits is not healthy. It can disturb the digestive health and may lead to bloating and acidity.

4/6

Consuming curd while having a cold or cough

According to Ayurveda, it is best to avoid curd during cough and cold, as it is heavy and can worsen congestion due to its cooling nature.

5/6

Eating curd on an empty stomach

Curd is acidic in nature, and consuming it on an empty stomach may disrupt the natural pH of your stomach and lead to other complications. It is best consumed when paired with carbs like roti or paratha as a part of a meal.

6/6

Cooking or heating curd

Cooking or heating curd is not a good idea. Heating curd is said to destroy or disturb its beneficial bacteria and turn it sour. It is best consumed fresh in the form of a dip, raita, or smoothie.
