The importance of ancient food rules

When it comes to mindful eating, it is always suggested to focus on eating the right food in the right quantity. Our ancestors also emphasized the importance of seasonal produce and time-tested dos and don’ts. Rooted in Ayurveda and age-old traditions, these ancient food rules carry strong scientific reasoning about what to eat, how to eat, and when to eat. Addressing the same, celebrity nutritionist Shweta Shah recently shared a post on Instagram, where she talked about 5 ancient food rules and the logic behind them. Wheat Rule


According to her post, one should always use wheat that is at least 3+ months old, rolled with a little castor oil. She also warns that fresh wheat is hard to digest, hence it should be avoided.

Rice Rule



If we go by Shweta's post, it is better to eat aged rice (at least 1 year old) and not the new rice. According to her, old rice is lighter and better for digestion.

Ghee Rule


As per Shweta, aged ghee or purana ghee is used like medicine in Ayurveda and is best for healing and detoxification.

Jaggery Rule


According to Shweta's post, 1-year-old jaggery is best for consumption. She states that new jaggery heats the body and upsets the digestive system.

Leafy Veggies Rule


She suggests avoiding leafy veggies in monsoon and on Ekadashi, chaudas, and aatham. They are tamasic and harder to digest during these periods.
