4 ways to retain the freshness of mint leaves

Mint leaves are one of the most aromatic and potent herbs commonly used in various culinary dishes and beverages. In fact, adding them to drinks can instantly amp up the taste and experience of the drinks. However, one of the major downsides of these mint leaves is that they tend to wilt and lose their colour, texture and taste quickly if not stored properly. Here are four effective ways to keep your mint leaves fresh for longer, so you can enjoy their delightful flavor and aroma anytime you need.

2/5

Damp Paper Towel

One of the easiest methods to retain the freshness of mint leaves is to wrap them in a slightly damp paper towel. Simply wash the mint leaves, shake off excess water, and gently wrap them in a moist (not soaked) paper towel. Place the wrapped mint inside a plastic bag or an airtight container, then store it in the refrigerator. This method helps maintain moisture levels without causing the leaves to rot, keeping them fresh for up to a week.

3/5

Store in a Jar of Water

Another effective way to preserve mint leaves is by treating them like fresh flowers. Trim the ends of the mint stems and place them in a jar filled with an inch of water. Cover the mint loosely with a plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator. Change the water every two days to keep it fresh. This method allows the mint to stay vibrant and fragrant for up to two weeks.

4/5

Freeze in Ice Cubes

If you want to keep mint leaves fresh for an even longer period, freezing them in ice cubes is an excellent option. Wash and chop the mint leaves, then place them into an ice cube tray. Fill the tray with water and freeze. When needed, simply pop out a mint ice cube and add it directly to drinks, soups, or sauces. This method locks in the freshness and flavor for several months.

5/5

Dry and Store

For long-term storage, drying mint leaves is an effective solution. Simply wash and pat dry the mint leaves, then spread them out on a tray in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Once fully dried, store them in an airtight container. Though the texture changes, dried mint retains its aromatic properties and can be used for teas, cooking, and garnishing for months.
