Avoid these foods if you have Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Carbohydrates, fats, processed foods, and even natural sugars can cause your blood sugar levels to rise. However, having diabetes doesn’t mean a person has to stop eating the foods that they enjoy. Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help people with diabetes manage their condition and reduce the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and other health-related complications. Uncontrolled diabetes can have many serious consequences; people with diabetes can eat most foods, but they may need to eat some of them in smaller portions. Let us take a look at the foods that people with diabetes should avoid:

2/11

Breakfast cereals

If you have diabetes, then consuming sweetened breakfast cereals is the worst way to start your day. Most cereals are highly processed and contain far more carbs than people realize. To keep your blood sugar level stable, choose a protein-based low-carb breakfast instead.

3/11

Soda and sugar-sweetened beverages

Foods that are made of processed sugar, like desserts, candies, and soda, are considered low-quality carbohydrates. They lack in nutritional value as well as cause a sharp spike in your blood sugar.

4/11

Trans fats

Foods containing trans fats are extremely unhealthy. They are found in frozen dinners, packaged food, and other baked goods to extend their shelf life. Although trans fats don’t directly affect your blood sugar, it causes increased inflammation, insulin resistance, and impaired arterial function which keeps the people with diabetes at constant risk of heart diseases.

5/11

High-carb, processed foods

Carbohydrates are essential for our body and a good source of energy but a person with diabetes should be careful. White bread, bagel, pasta, and other refined-flour foods have been shown to significantly increase blood sugar levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

6/11

Flavoured coffee

Plain Coffee is known to provide many health benefits, which also include a reduced risk of diabetes. However, flavoured coffee is similar to a liquid dessert which is loaded with carbs and sweeteners. People with diabetes should only prefer plain coffee.

7/11

Honey

Natural sugars like brown sugar, honey, and maple syrup can also cause blood sugar hikes. These are not highly processed but contain as many carbs as white sugar.

8/11

Fruit juice

Fruits are a source of fibre, vitamins, and minerals, everything that a person needs. However, some fruits may cause your blood glucose to rise. Fresh fruit juice is more likely to increase blood sugar levels than whole fruit. This is why whole fruits make a good dessert than eating a sugary snack, cake or ice-cream.

9/11

Dried fruits

Fruits are rich in many nutrients. When fruit is dried, the process results in a loss of water that leads to the concentration of these nutrients. For example, raisins contain more than three times as many carbs as grapes do. If you have diabetes, you must stick with low-sugar fruits like fresh berries.

10/11

Dairy products

Dairy products provide you with calcium, proteins, and vitamins. They also contain a sugar called lactose. People with diabetes can consume dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese but must avoid full-fat dairy items such as whole milk, full-fat cheese, sweetened yogurts, full-fat cottage cheese, etc.

11/11

Proteins

Protein helps the body build and repair tissues. If you have diabetes, you should choose your protein sources with care. Eating red meat such as beef, pork, and lamb may increase the risk of diabetes, even at low consumption. One must avoid, processed meats, red meat, and fried, high-sodium meats.
