What is a choga?

A choga is a long-sleeved ensemble traditionally worn in India and parts of Central Asia. Inspired by Turkish and Persian attire, it became a prominent feature in the wardrobe of Indian royalty, rising to popularity during the Mughal era and again in the 19th century. The choga was traditionally worn over lighter outfits such as the jama, kurta, and angarkha, creating a practical yet stylish layered look. It was often paired with stunning Kashmiri shawls, which instantly uplifted its overall appeal. In modern times, it is worn over sherwanis, kurtas, anarkalis, and more, and Bollywood has given us some iconic choga moments that are worth adding to your wedding moodboard. Let’s take a look at five statement-worthy choga looks.

Sanya Malhotra

For Manish Malhotra’s 2025 Diwali party, Sanya Malhotra was spotted in a velvet choga-kurta and salwar set from Heena Kochhar’s iconic collection. Her deep maroon flared short kurta with billowy sleeves and an oversized fit came adorned with statement gold embroidery and a shimmery broad border. She teamed it with contrasting royal blue palazzo pants featuring intricate golden embroidery, giving the look a richly regal spin.

Rishab Rikhiram Sharma

Music producer and sitar maestro Rishab Rikhiram Sharma was seen in a beautifully crafted super-flared full-length choga kurta that was truly made for the stars. This customised piece, drenched in pastel blue hues and crafted by the label re-ceremonial, was worn like royal armour. It featured neat golden embroidery all over and was paired with white palazzo pants, which added a breezy and flared finish.

Sonam Kapoor

The iconic fashion queen of Bollywood looked absolutely graceful in a three-piece ethnic set. She wore a bright yellow brocade choga kurta with a high neckline and a graceful knee-length flare, paired with a contrasting teal green full-length open jacket. But what truly uplifted the entire look was her ankle-length fitted matching pants, which featured golden detailing around the hemline and created the perfect wedding-guest ensemble.

Richa Chadha

For Ayushmann Khurrana’s Diwali party last year, Richa Chadha was spotted wearing a beautiful royal purple choga kurta featuring elbow-length sleeves with embroidery around the cuffs, which looked absolutely glamorous. The high neckline also came with matching vibrant embroidery. Instead of the usual pyjama pants, she chose a statement dhoti-style ankle-length pair, which brought in a chic overall balance. This iconic set was picked from Pink City by Sarika and came with a price tag of Rs 42,500.

Kangana Ranaut’s traditional wardrobe is filled with heritage-rich and artistic ensembles that are worth seeking inspiration from. The diva always manages to showcase her rich Indian and Himachali roots, leaving us swooning for more. The knee-length flared kurta with full sleeves, an oversized fit, golden embroidery, and a statement border was paired with ankle-length pyjamas and a matching dupatta.
