International labels are giving the Indian saree a modern couture spin

Unless you’re living under a rock, chances are you have already seen or might have gushed over Alia Bhatt’s saree-gown look from Gucci at the Cannes Film Festival this year, which turned out to be a highlight of the year. But Janhvi Kapoor is now taking over this crown with her recent Miu Miu gown-saree look, which looks no less than utterly iconic. But do you know that Gucci and Miu Miu are not the only two international luxury brands that have tried to reimagine the Indian saree, adding a hint of modish notes? Let’s see 5 global brands that gave the Indian saree the perfect couture spin.

Janhvi Kapoor’s Miu Miu gown

Janhvi Kapoor ruled the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival in a customised Miu Miu creation that blurred the line between gown and saree. Crafted on an ivory base with delicate polka-dot accents, the one-shoulder silhouette featured a neat pleated drape that evoked traditional Indian drama, while the cinched waistline brought in sharp structure. Flowing effortlessly with a fluid bottom, this design paid homage to Indian sensibilities in the most subtle yet striking way.

Alia Bhatt’s Gucci blouse

Along La Croisette, Alia Bhatt created a sensation at the 78th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a statement Gucci ensemble that resembled a dazzling Indian drape. The metallic couture piece was embellished with Swarovski crystals, creating a chainmail-like nude illusion. Paired with a plunging deep-neck blouse and elevated by a shoulder-attached side train, the look echoed the elegance of a saree while retaining a couture edge. Though the world rushed to call it Gucci’s “first-ever saree,” the brand clarified it was, in fact, a gown. Still, Alia carried it with such grace that it became a fashionable nod to Indian draping.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Balenciaga sari dress

Before Balenciaga became synonymous with shock value, Cristóbal Balenciaga himself experimented with saree-inspired silhouettes in the early 1960s. In 1961, he introduced the now-iconic “Sari Dress,” crafted in blush pink with intricate golden embroidery lining the borders. A few years later, in 1964, Elizabeth Taylor wore another version at the Gala of Lido, this time drenched in golden hues, making her look every bit the modern goddess.

Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy saree

Hubert de Givenchy’s genius is immortalised by the “Little Black Dress” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but the designer’s experimentation with saree-inspired styling is a lesser-known gem. In the same film, Audrey Hepburn appeared draped in what looked like a chic, saree-style ensemble. In reality, it was a bedsheet transformed by Givenchy into an impromptu saree, showing his flair for reimagining even the simplest elements into high fashion.

Isha Ambani in Schiaparelli’s first saree-inspired gown

Schiaparelli first explored saree-inspired fashion as early as 1935, drawing from the elegance of Maharani Sita Devi. While not a literal saree, the evening gown captured the spirit of Indian draping in electric blue rayon crepe. Fast-forward to recent years, when Isha Ambani wore Schiaparelli’s reimagined saree gown. Completed with a structured shawl, a diamond clip at the back, and a polished silver blouse, the look felt like a couture fantasy, almost as if it had stepped straight out of Disney’s Frozen.
